Cats are generally indoor animals since, unlike dogs, they don’t need to be walked outdoors to go to the bathroom or need much attention. However, cats still have many of the same instincts as their wild ancestors, such as the drive to go out on the hunt, which is why they actually love the outdoors. Not only do they love to chase things like insects and birds, but they enjoy basking in the sunlight. Yet, the world outside can be very dangerous to cats, so there are important factors pet owner’s should consider before letting the cats out.
Where You Live
Probably the most important factor is where you live. From old movies to old books that take place on a farm, everyone has an idea of what a barn cat is. When you live on a farm, it is relatively safe to let cats outdoors because there are less places to get lost, as well as less dangers since the area is more or less secluded. Meanwhile, if you’re living in an apartment in a major city, by no means let your cat outside. They will risk getting hit by a car, picked up by a stranger and even getting into a fight with other stray and wild animals like rats.
Cat’s Temperament
If you are considering letting your cat outdoors, try to analyze its behavior and temperament. An overly curious or energetic cat will be more likely to get itself into trouble outdoors. On the other hand, a timid or shy cat will move much more furtively and cautiously, doing everything to avoid other animals or people.
Giving a pet like a cat freedom is what most owners want. However, that freedom can also come with a price.
