The activities at a retirement community can be very exciting. The seniors play card games, shoot a little pool, and swim, putting a little pink into those cheeks. The recreational room is usually the highlight of the day, especially when the bingo cards come out. One of the favorite treats among the residents is receiving therapy with a furry friend. Nothing beats a happy dog as he visits from one person to another. Friendly licks and a wagging tail put bright smiles on everyone’s faces. There’s nothing more rewarding than letting Riley, an Irish terrier, volunteer to spread love and joy.

Watching Riley spend his time between senior/elder care communities and nursing homes is a real treat. The activities director gives him a schedule for visiting times. Riley looks forward to the visits where he gets pets from the local residents who all know his name. Sometimes, the year-old pup knows when someone really needs his attention and he just sits with them for a while. There’s hardly a time when he doesn’t bring a smile to everyone he greets. On occasion, Riley gets a special bath, then goes to hospitals to play with some of folks who don’t get out of bed too often. He is polite and never barks.

Being a calm and intuitive dog means a lot of work; he’s in demand. Some of the residents have given him small gifts that he gladly accepts. A knitted sweater in blue is one of his favorites. Sometimes, Riley gets a milk bone, a scrap of meat from the kitchen, or a chew toy. Not every dog is chosen to hang out with a great crowd of seniors. Just watching Riley’s head snap up when the car comes around the corner to the senior/ederly residence is a thrill. His tail starts wagging and a big grin goes from ear to ear.
