If you live in an apartment, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a dog. So long as pets are allowed where you live, there are dog breeds that can make themselves at home in an apartment. Of course, your furry friend will need outdoor exercise and daily walks, but outside of that, will be happy hanging out with you at home!
- Bichon Frise – This little dog is a great addition if you live in an apartment. The Bichon gets along with children and other pets, both dogs and cats. A neat thing about the Bichon is that it’s coat does not shed; however, they do need to be brushed regularly so that they don’t get mats. Also, their coat needs to be trimmed every six weeks or so.
- Poodle - Poodles come in three sizes, standard, miniature and toy. All three sizes fare well in an apartment as long as they get a daily exercise session. Poodles love water and standards in particular are excellent swimmers, so if you can take them in the water that’s great! Poodles are smart and easy to train.
- Greyhound - Although they are exceptionally fast and known as racing dogs, greyhounds are quite the couch potatoes! If you take them for daily walks, your greyhound will be very happy to “chill out” with you for the rest of the day. However, they do have a strong chase instinct, so keep them leashed when walking them in the neighborhood.
- Great Dane - This giant of a dog is very mellow by nature and much like the greyhound, they will spend much of their time relaxing inside house so long as you can take them out for some exercise each day. Great Danes are fabulous watchdogs but not excessive barkers — which is ideal in an apartment building.
