Are dogs the best pets?

Dogs are probably the best kinds of pets that people can have. Although there are many other pets – lizards, snails, turtles, birds, cats, horses – dogs come out winners every time, due to various good things about dogs that most other pets lack.

One of the best things about dogs is their intelligence and trainability. Cats, too, are quite intelligent, but they are not as easily trainable as dogs (maybe they are too intelligent!). Dogs, however, can be easily groomed and trained. You can train a dog to do many interesting and useful things. Dogs can be trained to help blind people walk the streets, allow small children outside the house with a trained dog in tow, rescue people lost in snow, blizzards and the mountain, sniff out narcotics and bombs by the police, and a host of other things. Of course, they can be easily trained to do their nature’s calls outside the house or in the right place, too. Try doing that with a bird!

Dogs are also very good companions. Perhaps, out of all kinds of pets, dogs are the most amicable towards human beings. They are almost always naturally friendly, and a lonely person can find good company in the presence of a loyal dog. There is no other animal that is willing to smilingly listen to you vent and rant. Sometimes, dogs are thought to be even uncannily aware of just exactly what you are telling them.

Good thing about dogs is that they do not really need much to feed. Dogs will often eat just what you eat at home, making you work less and spend less to procure pet food. Any healthy cooked food, without too much oil, or salt, or other strong spices, can suit a dog’s appetite. Not so with almost any other animal (other than goats!); they all need special food, special care, special attention, and are hard to maintain.
